Curatorial Projects

  • My first exhibition as curator, Places We Have Never Known, featuring the work of Adam Crowley, Jodi Hays, John Joseph Mitchell, and Yoella Razili, ran from April 9 to May 7, 2022, at Wavelength Space in Chattanooga, Tennessee.

    Press Release

Wavelength Space is pleased to present Places We Have Never Known, an exhibition that addresses the nature of memory, personal narrative, and the meaning of home. Bringing together an intimate grouping of paintings by Adam Crowley (Kansas City, Missouri), intricately assembled paintings by Jodi Hays (Nashville, Tennessee), tender, evocative paintings by John Joseph Mitchell (Southern New Jersey), and incisive sculptural work by Yoella Razili (Los Angeles), Places We Have Never Known takes its title from the following quote by American novelist, Carson McCullers:

“We are torn between nostalgia for the familiar and an urge for the foreign and strange. As often as not, we are homesick most for the places we have never known.”

    Curator’s Note

Places We Have Never Known embodies a sense of place that is difficult to name. Here you will find a longing for what once was, what never was, and what might be. There is a restlessness mingled with belonging. Even among ever-changing landscapes, there is stillness. There is an ache that sings.
